    Advanced Practice Nursing is an important and progressive feature of Nursing. It has gained recognition across the world in the past decade and is being implemented in the world and Singapore.

    Who is an Advanced Practice Nurse?

    An Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) is a Registered Nurse who has gained expert-level knowledge, Excellent Management and Decision making skills, and clinical competencies for extended practice. In Singapore, the title "Advanced Practice Nurse" is protected and only allowed to be used by individuals certified by the Singapore Nursing Board.
    The Role of Advanced Practice Nursing in Singapore gives the clinical path to the nurses and simultaneously prepares the
    APNs are skilled to provide a wide range of healthcare services including chronic illnesses. APNs in the Singapore Healthcare industry needs to work in all the work settings, including primary, secondary, and tertiary care and all nursing education.

    Eligibility :

    • In Order to be eligible to become an APN, he/she should be registered with the SNB and have a minimum of three years of post-registration experience in their individual specialty.
    • After the individual has graduated from an accredited program and has applied for registration, one has to complete one year of supervised clinical practice.
    • The Person has to practice a minimum of 1280 hours of direct patient care under the supervision of senior guidance and APNs.
    • The individual will go through the formal assessment conducted by SNB. After the certification as an APN, he/she has to renew the license annually with clinical practice and nursing education hours.
    According to the Singapore Nursing Board, APNs may be qualified for the following four specializations:
    • a) Acute Care APNs practicing in the ICUs and emergency departments
    • b) Medical/Surgical APNs practice in both general and specialized departments like Gerontology, Oncology, Cardiology, Neurology, Anesthesiology, etc
    • c) Community Care APNs are the ones who look after the patients with the common chronic illness at the clinics and in the community
    • d) Mental Health APNs work in psychiatric settings.
    While prescribing the medicines is traditionally under the medical domain, the Ministry of Health (MOH), Singapore has taken a step ahead to authorize the APNs to prescribe the medicines in certain acute care settings as per the defined protocols. The Ministry of Health (MOH) aims to have around 700 Advanced Practice Nurses who can also prescribe the medication in the near future.
